Wedding Roles
The Role of the Best Man
OK so we all know the best man looks after the rings on the big day but what else does he have to do.
Well, he will usually be the best friend or brother of the groom. The groom must be able to trust him explicitly.
As a best man you need to ask what is expected of you and what your duties are and don’t forget that the speech will need to be written and probably rewritten several times. Don’t forget to put a few jokes in there but please be tactful.
There are many books on the subject of the best man, it may be worth reading a few. Start by thanking the groom for allowing you to become his best man and what a privilege it is.
You can then start by telling a few funny stories about the Groom, how you met, what you used to get up to. If you know the bride, you may be able to tell a few anecdotes about her too (be very tactful) Perhaps the three of you have had adventures together.
Remember make it light and full of fun. Read out a few of the cards, especially from people who have not been able to share this special day but be careful not to do too many as the guests may become bored.
At the end of your speech you then make a toast to the Bride and Groom and wish them well in their new life together.

The Role of the Bridesmaid.
Tradition has it that all bridesmaids are unmarried. They are there to help the bride through her wedding day with little stress and anxiety. If she is married she becomes Matron of Honour.
There is always a chief bridesmaid who is in charge of the others and helps things to run as smoothly as possible. She is usually a sister or very close friend of the bride, a person that she has the up most trust in. Bridesmaids don’t just help on the day off the wedding but on the run up to it as well. From helping you choose the wedding dress, and the bridesmaid’s outfits to making sure the day runs smoothly.
She must be calm and get the bride through the run up to the big day with all the emotions it involves with as little stress as possible.
One of the fun things a chief bridesmaid is expected to do is organise the hen party. Please make sure it is what the bride will want and not what you think she will like. The bride of course may have her own ideas of what she wants so please discuss it.
This can be anything from a night out, to a weekend away or even a week away. It will be needed to be planned well in advance of the wedding day and also think about that wedding budget. Don’t blow the money on the hen night.
You must make sure you go to the dress rehearsals and then you will be au fait with the schedule on the big day.
On the wedding day
Arrive in plenty of time at the bride’s house on the morning of the wedding. Things are bound to be fraught at this time but as long as you remain calm you will be able to smooth the way ahead.
Your role for the day will be to assist the bride by helping with her dress. When she arrives at the church, make sure her dress and train are looking perfect. The chief bridesmaid should also make sure the other bridesmaids are doing their jobs properly. Some brides may want the bridesmaid to take notes of her gives what presents so that proper “thank you” letters can be done.
Most of all enjoy your day and who knows the next wedding might be yours.
